Established in 1987, the AWGL was founded, and is still run, by Tom Smith, PGA Professional. Tom created the league to provide off-season competition on southern New Jersey courses for amateur and professional golfers.

The AWGL runs great cold weather tournaments every Friday and the occasional Monday (weather permitting) from late October through March. Each tournament is comprised of three divisions.

* Open Division: (gross and net prizes for pros and amateurs)

* Senior Division: (amateurs 50 to 65)

* Super Senior Division: (amateurs 66 and up)

The League has become extremely popular and tournament fields, even in the coldest weather, usually comprise 60 to 80 players.
