Convery Beats Age By 4 on the Bay Course - Blackmon One Under at Seaview

The run of great golf continued into event #5 as 53  cool weather linksters toured the historic Bay Course at Seaview GC last Monday and put some very good numbers on the scoreboard. A member of Seaview’s professional staff, Cliff Still continued his winning streak and took first gross in the Open division with 75. Professional Joe Casey from Pennsauken GC topped the Open net with a 2 under 69. In the Senior division, Steve Wolbert, playing out of the Centerton GC finished first in gross with 78. The Centerton guys continued their winning ways as Mark Wiley applied a 12 handicap to a nice 83 for 71 and the net victory. The best round of the day took place in the Super Senior division as John Blackmon combined nines of 38 & 32 for a one under 70 gross. The Juniata GC player and retired Philly police officer was one stroke ahead of Mercer Oak’s Tom DiCinti, who finished at even par 71. John made three birdies and an eagle and Tom carded four birdies. Hats off to this great play. In the SS net some more super golf was played as Jerry Convery from Wedgwood GC beat his age by four strokes and the resultant 74 less his 10 handicap was good for the win. Jerry parred every hole on the back nine. Very clean scorecard. New member and a PGA apprentice golf pro from Springdale GC, Shawn Camisa stuck it to 11’ 7” on hole #7 to pocket closest to pin money. Shawn completed the triple play with a 2nd net and a skin in the Open division. Jerry Convery continued his winning ways as his shot on #11 stopped 15’ 8” from the cup for the CTP win. Best shot of the day was executed by Dennis Starr on hole #17. He lasered one to within 10’ for the Closest to Pin payoff. The recap of prize winners is attached to this doc.

We’ll be taking off a few days for the Thanksgiving holiday and play will resume on Friday 12/1 at the Links GC in Marlton, NJ. The following week 12/8 we head up to LBI National (formerly Sea Oaks) for event #7. On 12/15 we play the annual “Christmas Scramble” at the Avalon GC and AWGL members may invite a non-member to be their partner for this two-person scramble and the annual membership fee is waived. Reminder that Scramble events are played in two categories (A & B) according to team handicap. Handicaps are computed at 25% of the combined numbers.

Pat, Al and I wish everyone a very happy and enjoyable Thanksgiving and we’ll look forward to seeing everyone at the Links. Please……..Travel Safe.

Van Meter Goes Low at Running Deer

Mother Nature was with us yesterday as we conducted event #4 of the current AWGL season at Ron Jaworski’s Running Deer Golf Club and the outstanding S. Jersey layout provided a testy venue which allowed some very good scores.

In the Open division a two way tie for 1st gross occurred when host PGA pro, Dan Hoban and Tim Tulio from Sakima GC turned in 74’s. In the ensuing playoff Tim’s 3 on #18 beat Dan’s 4 for first place. Dan took low net with 69. Three of Tim’s four skins held up for a nice payout. The low round of the day was posted in the Senior division as Greg Van Meter, playing out of the Centerton GC combined nines of 35 – 34 for great 3 under par 69 and first place in gross. Close behind Greg was Dave West from Exton, PA with one under 71 and Running Deer’s Tom Alestock at even par 72. Very rare that we have three gross scores at par and below in the same division. Dave applied his 3 handicap and the 68 was good for the win in Senior net. Gene Flanagan also carded a net 68, but lost in a playoff of handicaps 3 to 9. The scoring didn’t slow down in the Super Senior division as Jon Mabry shot a nice 73 for a two stroke victory in the gross category. Tied for second at 75 was Tom Dicinti from Mercer Oaks GC and Running Deer linkster, Rocky Dare. Naz Gagliardi came across river from Bensalem CC and took SS net with a 4 under 68. Pineland GC player, Bob Smith finished second to Naz with two under par 70. Again, real good golf being played on an extremely testy and challenging golf course. This might be an AWGL first as all three closest to pin winners had shots that were closer than 4’ from the flag. Seaview’s Cliff Still drilled it to 3’ 2’ on hole #5 for the win. On the 7th hole Steve Wolbert’s shot stopped only 2’ 5” away as the Centerton player pocketed the cash. John Sherm completed the triple play as he nailed his shot on #16 to 3’ 9”. Pretty good shot making going on.

We had most of the Running Deer field sign up for Seaview next Monday 11/20 and it looks like we’ll hit 70 players on the Bay course. If you are considering playing at Seaview, please let me know so I can update the tee sheet. If you haven’t play Seaview, it’s a very special experience and definitely a “bucket list” track. Looking forward to seeing everyone “down the shore” and please……Travel Safe!

Valleybrook GC - 11/3/23

The results of event #2 are in the book and Ron Jaworski’s  Valleybrook Golf Club provided a very interesting and enjoyable venue for the winter leaguers. Not too cold, but the chilly winds made the course fairly testy and the players responded with some good numbers. Professional, Larry Silk, golf instructor at Ron’s Golf Hospital in Northfield made the money list for the second week in a row with a first place finish in Open division gross. His 77 beat Pennsauken’s Joe Casey by a single stroke. Joe came back with a shot that stopped 1’ 11” from the cup on hole #5 for the closest to pin win. Recently retired from Woodcrest CC, PGA pro Bill Torlucci took Open net with 72….topping Centerton GC pro, Chad Cerino’s 73. Chad made an eagle 3 on hole #2, knocking in a twenty footer after hitting the par five in two great shots. The Centerton gang continued their winning ways as Gary Peart carded a gross 77 and in a playoff of cards, beat Juniata’s John Blackmon, who also shot 77. These Senior division olayers tied with handicaps of five and on the first extra hole Gary’s 4 beat John’s 5. Tom Faro from John F. Byrne GC in Philly lead the Senior net category with a 3 under par 68. The best score of the day was posted in the Super Senior division and first place gross went to Mercer Oaks player, Tom Dicinti, who combined nines of 36 – 34 for a one under par 70. Super Senior net was taken by one of “Philly’s Finest” as retired police officer, John Colarette carded a nice 83 to go with his 15 handicap for the winning 68. John made it a double win with a shot 6’ 6” away from the flag on hole #15 for CTP money. Gary Peart also added to his day’s winnings with the best shot on hole #11 for closest to pin.

Special recognition of Centerton player, John Kasper as he beat his age by 2 strokes. The 84 year old Super Senior shot 82 for this outstanding accomplishment. We’re going to comp John’s trail fee next week at Shore Gate and going forward, anyone who beats their age will receive the same award. Nice playing, John.

Many of you guys knew brother, Dick and the National PGA is doing a tribute to him this coming Wednesday morning 9:00AM Eastern time. Access; http://www.pga.org

A big thank you to Valleybrook’s PGA pro, Brad Miller as he and his great staff provided us with a most enjoyable day of golf and camaraderie afterwards in Riley’s Pub. All the “Jaws” facilities are very well managed. Next week we head to Shore Gate “Down the Shore” and Greg advised me that the course is in fantastic shape and they are looking forward to our visit. Please text/email me with your plans to play or not, so I can get a head start on the tee sheet. Looking forward to seeing everyone at Shore Gate and please…..Travel Safe!

Opening Day of Season 37 at Avalon Golf Club

Season 37 of the AWGL got off to a nice start at the beautifully conditioned Avalon Golf Club last Friday and the cool weather linksters posted some very good numbers. With temps reaching the high 70’s and the course in pristine shape, one could not ask for a better day to test their shot making skills. Leading the Open division gross was Seaview’s Cliff Still with a nice even par 71 on nines of 36-35. Dave Newkirk, playing out of Running Deer, posted a 77 to go with his 15 handicap and the resulting 62 was low in Open net. Second Open net went to Larry Silk and he made it a triple play with two skins and closest to pin on #15. The Senior division was closely contested as Running Deer’s Tom Alestock carded nines of 36 – 37 and his 73 was good for low gross. Tom doubled down with the closest to pin on #11. Close behind was Steve Wolbert from Centerton with 74 and with his 8 handicap the 66 took Senior net. Things didn’t slow down in the Super Senior division as Mike Owsik from the M Golf Center in Bryn Mawr, PA went out in 2 under 34 and came back with 37 for 71 and the top spot in gross. Dave Jacobson from Medford Village finished in second place with 72 as did Eagle Ridge’s Hank Huelsebusch. Hank’s 64 was good for first in SS net. Hand also added to his winnings with closest to pin on #5. Attached is the recap of prize winners and the gift cards will be available at our next event on Friday 11/3 at the Valleybrook GC.

A big thank you to the great staff at Avalon and especially to the pros, Ted Wenner and Dennis Jones. These gentlemen go way out of their way to provide us a most enjoyable day of golf. Next event at Avalon is the Christmas Scramble on 12/15. Please text or email me if you are planning to play at Valleybrook next Friday.

With the help of new AWGL member Jeff Lek, we have a new website and you can access it;   www.atlanticwintergolfleague.com   We’ll see everyone at Valleybrook and please…..travel safe.
