It was a little chilly ”down the shore” with the temps in the 40’s, but The Shore Club cordially greeted forty one players for event #9 in the current AWGL season. The seaside breezes stayed light and the combination of a beautifully conditioned course and an eager group of cool weather golfers produced some good numbers on the scoreboard. The Open Division gross was won by PGA pro, Bob Issler, playing out of the Pine Barrens GC, as he posted an 81. Pennsauken’s Joe Casey was a single stroke back of Bob at 82. The two pros from the Springdale GC, Chris Brock & Shawn Camisa finished 1 – 2 in Open net with scores of 72 and 73 respectively. Playing conditions were testy with cold temperatures and frozen turf and the numbers reflected this. Only one skin in the Open and all the money went to Seaview GC pro, Cliff Still with his birdie 4 on hole #10. Prize winner recap and the scoresheets from the Shore Club event are attached.
The best round of the day was turned in by Cape May’s Dave Smith and his 77 bested Exton, PA’s Dave West by one shot in the Senior Division gross. Kevin Omori from DuPont CC topped the Senior net with a 3 under par 69. The competition was stiff as Juniata’s Larry Lauterborn was a single stroke behind at 70.
In the Super Senior Division Mike Owsik Sr. from the M Golf Center in Bryn Mawr, PA and Medford Village’s Dave Jacobson finished in a tie for gross first place with 79’s. Mike’s plus 2 handicap won the playoff over Dave’s 3. Jim McCarry from Sewell, NJ carded the best net score of the day and his 66 was good for the victory in SS net.
The closest to pin contests were held on holes #5, #11 and #16 and some real good shots were executed by the cool weather linksters. Gary Peart from Centerton took CTP money with a shot on #5 that stopped 20’ from the flagstick. Bensalem’s Bob Heindel edged it to 8’ 1” to beat the field on hole #11. Best shot of the day on a par 3 was executed by Tom Walvoord from DuPont CC as he zeroed one in to 5’ 1” on the 16th. Pretty good shot making by the winter leaguers as the turf was not holding balls real well.
The day was made even more fun with the “Inside Golf” filming of the day’s activities. Harry Donahue conducted several interesting interviews and the resulting show will be aired several times over the next few weeks. This production can also be viewed on YouTube by searching Inside Golf and winter golf. Next stop on the schedule is event #10 at Greate Bay CC on Friday 1/12. Until then, stay warm and “keep it in the short grass”.
