Looks like we dodged a bullet last Friday as the rain held off long enough for the last group to complete their round at the Links Golf Club in the 6th event of the current AWGL season. Special thanks to Mark Kriews, GM and Director of Golf operations at the Links for providing us with a real nice day for our tournament. Forty three players donned their cool weather/rain gear and the nicely conditioned course tested their games. Some good numbers appeared on the scoreboard and taking low gross in the Open Division was Seaview pro, Cliff Still who scored a 76. Cliff was tied by White Oaks & Centerton GM, Mitch Primas and the resulting playoff went to Cliff; 4-3-4 to 4-3-5. Mitch paired an 8 handicap to his 76 and the resultant 68 was good for the win in Open net. Gene Flanagan, playing out of the DuPont CC finished first gross in the Senior Division with 81, besting J.F. Byrne’s Tom Faro by 2. The Delaware gang continued their winning ways as Kevin Omori, also from DuPont CC, topped the senior net with 73. Best score of the day was turned in by Tom DiCinti from Mercer Oaks CC in the Super Senior Division as he posted a nice 74. Another Blue Hen turned up as Tom Walvoord from DuPont lead the SS net with a great 63. Tom shot 75 to go with his 12 handicap for winning score. Also shooting 75 was Dave Jacobson from Medford Village CC. Great golf by these veteran linksters. In the closest to pin competition, DuPont’s Gene Flanagan doubled down with a shot on the par three 14th hole that stopped 3’ 4” from the flagstick and he pocketed the CTP money. Centerton’s Gary Peart zeroed it in to 11’ 3” on the 8th hole to win the prize. Philly’s John Colarette won the third closest to pin contest with his shot on hole #17 that stopped 10’ 5” from the cup. Nice shot making by these hearty cool weather golfers.
Looking ahead, we travel to LBI National (formerly Sea Oaks CC) next Friday 12/8 for the 7th event of the season. In a recent conversation with LBI Nat’l head golf pro, Zach Bush, he advised me that the golf course was in superb condition and some nice renovations to the facility have been completed. We’re returning to LBI after a three year layoff due to a change in ownership and I can assure you that the day will be most pleasurable. The tee sheet is open for the “Christmas Scramble” at Avalon on 12/15 and if you have determined your partner, let me know. Reminder that you may invite a non-member and the annual fee is waived. Already have a couple of father-son pairings signed in. It’s a fun day and the Avalon staff goes a long way to make it most enjoyable.
