52 players teed it up at Linwood CC last Friday in event #13 of the current AWGL season and the scoreboard was on fire…not really. The heat came from three rounds in the 60’s, a first in league history. In a round that featured 5 birdies, Dan Ayars from Running Deer GC paired nines of 31 & 35 for a four under 66 and the win in Open division gross. Running Deer’s Director of Golf, Dan Hoban took the Open runner up cash with 72. The trip south from Springdale GC in Princeton, NJ was worth it for pro, Chris Brock as he topped the Open net category with 65. While touring the beautiful Linwood CC clubhouse, I noticed in the trophy room a list of club champions. AWGL member and golf pro Larry Silk won the LCC championship 10 times, starting in 1981. Don’t think I know anyone who has come close to that accomplishment. Congrats, Silky.
In the Senior division Dave West from Exton, PA posted 66 (33-33} and his five under par round with six birdies won the #1 gross prize. The third round of the day in the 60’s was turned in by Tom Alestock, playing out of Running Deer GC as he carded a one under par 69 for runner-up in Senior gross. Atlantis GC’s Joe Abood shot his best round of the year, a 79 and with his 16 handicap the resulting 63 was good for first in Senior net.
Seven players broke 80 in the Super Senior division and leading the way with 75 was Tom Walvoord from DuPont CC There was a three-way tie for 2nd and Medford Village’s Dave Jacobson won with a 4 on the extra hole. SS low net first place went to AWGL Tournament Director, Al Turse as the Centerton GC linkster turned in a 76 and with his 11 handicap the 65 was low after a two extra hole playoff. Tom Alestock doubled up with a win in closest to pin as his shot on #6 stopped 7’ 3” from the flagstick. On #10, Mark Wiley had the closest shot of the day as he zeroed one in to 2’ and the CTP win. Seaview’s Cliff Still nailed it on #16 to 3’ 8” and pocketed the cash. Down through the AWGL years there have been many great rounds shot, but the scoreboard at Linwood was one of the best. Congrats to you guys for some great play under very difficult conditions.
Next Friday at Shore Gate GC is looking pretty good, weatherwise, and if you are planning to play this outstanding shore course please text/email me with your groups. Looking forward to seeing everyone “Down the Shore” and please……Travel Safe!
