Mother Nature cut us another break as the rain held off and we got event #18 of the current AWGL season into the records. 38 teams of two toured the challenging Running Deer course last Friday and quite a few very good numbers hit the scoreboard. Dave West & Bob Issler teamed up to shoot 63 and with their handicap of 2 the resulting 61 took Flight “A” (handicaps 1-2-3) net. Low gross in the “A” went to the “Griffiths”…Q III & Q IV paired nines of 31 and 33 for 64. Q III was patting his son, Q IV on the back for his two great shots on #5 & #7 for win in Closest to Pin. It was nice to welcome back a couple of long time winter leaguers as guest players….Gil Monis & Frank Kohute.
In Flight “B” (handicaps 4 & 5) is was a close battle and finishing on top in gross was Kevin Convery & Joe Delio with a nice round of 3 under par 69…2 ahead of Paul Leddy & Liam Jones at 71. The DuPont GC crew stepped up again as Gene Flanagan & Kevin Omori posted a net 65 to edge Bill Giulian & Bob Wheeler by a single stroke. Kevin and Joe doubled down with a closest to pin win on hole #13….BTW it was Joe’s shot.
Philly’s Juniata GC was well represented as Steve Szychulski & Larry Lauterborn went out in 38 and came back in 35 for 73 and first place in “C” Flight (handicaps 6 – 10) gross. Harry Renwick & Dennis Starr carded a gross 76 and with their handicap of 10 they took first place net with 66. The Closest to Pin money for hole #16 went to Cliff Still & Bruce Apple as their shot stopped 3’ 5” from the flagstick.
We’re only a week away from the 37th championship at Avalon GC next Friday 3/15. I got a lot of signups at Running Deer and it’s very important that I know if you plan to play and stay for the brunch and prize presentations following golf. I must give Avalon a number to prepare for. Al Turse and I plan to lay out the course for the championship and we’re going to keep it fair and playable for all three age groups. We have over 50 signed up so far and we’ll probably approach 80 in the final count. The entry fee for the championship will be $65 and the prize pool is going to be the highest ever. Looking forward to seeing everyone at Avalon and Please…….Travel Safe!
