Hard to imagine we got event #3 in last Friday at Shore Gate as the light showers and cool shore breezes made playing conditions rather difficult. In spite of the testy rain, 47 AWGL linksters hung in and posted some respectable scores. Leading the way with the best score of the day was Seaview pro, Cliff Still with a score 0f 73 and with his 6 handicap he got first place in Open division net. Second place net went to Juniata GC’s Steve Szychulski as he posted an even par 72. Two-time AWGL champion (2003 & 2008) and PGA pro Jason Panter grabbed first place gross in the Open division with a 74. Bob Issler, PGA pro from Pine Barrens GC was Open gross runner-up with 78. 2022 AWGL champion, Dave West shot 76 and it was good for 1st in Senior division gross….3 strokes in front of Running Deer’s Tom Alestock who carded 76. Playing out of Galloway Nat’l GC near AC, Mark Papineau paired his 15 handicap with a nice 86 and the resulting 71 was low in Senior net. Finishing 2nd Senior net was Philly fire fighter, Jim Babst as the Five Ponds GC linkster posted a 75. In the Super Senior division, low gross went to Dave Jacobson from Medford Village GC who toured the testy Shore Gate layout in 80 strokes. Only one shot behind Dave was Running Deer GC’s Rocky Dare. The famous S. Jersey horseman, Reigning World Champion, registered an 81. The guys from Five Ponds GC in Warminster, PA continued their winning way as Max Bilkins went 44-40 for a total of 84 and with his 12 handicap the even par 72 topped the SS net category. Dave Jacobson doubled up with a shot on hole #8 that stopped 5’ 4” from the cup and the closest to pin victory. Pennsauken’s Tim Durkin nailed one to 6’ 6” on #17 for the CTP win. It was tough going, but as they say: “Hey man, it’s the winter league…..play on”
Next Friday 11/17 we head to Running Deer and Head PGA pro, Dan Hoban has given me the starting holes for our 10:00AM shotgun start. Please text/email me your groups so I can get a head start on the tee sheet. The following Monday 11/20 we’ll be playing the bay course at Seaview Resort & CC. Thanks to the effort of Cliff Still we will be returning to this outstanding Jersey Seaside course.
Each week I have my Cobra staff bag and clubs on display for your inspection and have gotten some very positive reactions from many of you. The Cobra/Puma rep is Bill Lee and he is also a PGA golf pro. Bill has been a strong supporter of the AWGL and a big “Thank You” goes out to him. Going forward, we plan to provide some Cobra demo clubs for you to try.
Pat, Al and I are looking forward to seeing everyone at Ron Jaworski’s Running Deer GC next Friday and…….Please, Travel Safe!
